How to Prepare Your Roof for Hurricane Season in Florida
Carlos Mendes
Lead Roofing Inspector
Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June 1 through November 30, and every year, thousands of homeowners are caught off guard by the sudden severity of tropical storms. Your roof is your home's first — and most critical — line of defense.
Start with a Professional Inspection
Before hurricane season kicks in, schedule a comprehensive inspection with a licensed roofing contractor. A trained eye can catch cracked tiles, loose flashing, deteriorating sealants, and other vulnerabilities that aren't visible from the ground. At Florida Roof Tech, our inspections cover every inch of your roof system — from ridge cap to drip edge.
Check and Secure Flashing
Flashing is the metal material installed around chimneys, vents, skylights, and joints. If it's loose or corroded, water can get underneath during heavy rains and cause serious interior damage. Make sure all flashing is sealed tight and in good condition.
Clear Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged gutters can cause water to back up under your roofline. Before the rainy season, clear out all leaves, debris, and built-up sediment. Make sure downspouts direct water at least 4 feet away from your foundation.
Trim Overhanging Trees
Large branches hanging over your roof become dangerous projectiles during high winds. Trim any branches within 6–10 feet of your roofline, and have a certified arborist evaluate any large trees on your property.
Know Your Insurance Coverage
Review your homeowner's insurance policy before a storm hits — not after. Understand your deductibles for wind and hurricane damage, and document your roof's current condition with photos. If you're unsure what's covered, call your agent now.
Upgrade to Hurricane-Rated Materials
If your roof is aging or hasn't been upgraded in over 15 years, consider replacing it with hurricane-rated materials designed to withstand Florida's wind codes. Miami-Dade County requires some of the strictest building codes in the nation — materials that meet these standards can mean the difference between minor repairs and total replacement.
